1958 World Cup

What might have been.

Not only a tragedy for Manchester United, the Munich crash also decimated England manager Walter Winterbottom’s plans for the World Cup. He would have fielded Roger Byrne, Tommy Taylor and of course Duncan Edwards in his team. Many thought he should have played Bobby Charlton anyway.

England played out 3 draws in the group stage against Russia, Brazil and Austria before losing 1-0 in a play off to Russia. Who’s to say what would have happened with those 3 in the team. Its doubtful whether they could have coped with the Brazilians and their new 17 year old sensation Pele but the Swedes made the final and England could well have done so in their place.
