Arsenal’s 1937/38 campaign delivered another major triumph during the club’s remarkable period of dominance in English football. Under manager George Allison, the Gunners secured the First Division championship for the fifth time in eight seasons, reinforcing their position as the leading club of the 1930s.

The title was far from straightforward. Arsenal sat as low as eleventh in November and faced a closely fought battle with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Their experience proved decisive during the closing weeks, however, and three consecutive victories completed an impressive recovery. A commanding 5–0 win over Bolton Wanderers on the final day secured the championship by a single point.

Ted Drake was Arsenal’s leading goalscorer despite missing a number of matches through injury, while Cliff Bastin remained another important attacking presence. When Drake was unavailable late in the season, Eddie Carr stepped forward with five goals across the final three fixtures. Arsenal’s FA Cup campaign ended in the fifth round, but their league success ensured another memorable year at Highbury.

The surviving Arsenal programmes from 1937/38 provide a valuable record of this championship-winning season. Featuring team line-ups, club notes, fixture information and period advertising, they capture the character of matchdays at one of football’s most famous grounds.
