Everton’s 1937/38 season was a campaign of inconsistent results, emerging talent and glimpses of the success that would follow. Competing in the First Division, the Toffees finished in 14th place, but their attacking football produced several memorable victories at Goodison Park.
The outstanding figure was teenage centre-forward Tommy Lawton. Still only 18, Lawton scored 28 league goals to finish as the First Division’s leading marksman. His remarkable performances established him as one of English football’s brightest young talents and provided the foundations for Everton’s championship-winning side of the following season.
Notable results included a 4–1 home victory over Manchester City, a 4–1 success against Chelsea and a dramatic 5–3 win over West Bromwich Albion. Everton also defeated Liverpool 2–1 at Anfield, although the return fixture ended in defeat. Their FA Cup campaign began with victory away to Chelsea before Sunderland eliminated them in the fourth round.
The surviving Everton programmes from 1937/38 document a fascinating transitional season. Alongside team line-ups and fixture details, their editorial content and period advertisements recreate the experience of attending Goodison Park during the final years before the Second World War.
For collectors, these issues offer an early record of Lawton’s rise and feature many of the players who would soon take Everton to the league title. With pre-war programmes becoming increasingly scarce, each surviving example preserves an important part of the club’s history and the wider story of football in the 1930s.
